New York Liberty re-sign Tina Charles

By Matt Hallett

It was announced today that the New York Liberty re-signed their core player and super-star Tina Charles. In what can only be described as a tumultuous offseason, the failure to re-sign Charles up until now has not been a good image for the franchise.

This has all been caused by the decision of owner James Dolan who tried to sell the team after the last WNBA season. This uncertainty has meant that new coach Katie Smith has not been able to lure any big name free agents to the Liberty.

Charles has only played 264 games and her stats are going to go down as some of the best WNBA history. She is the greatest rebounder of all time averaging 10.05 per game. She is the only player in WNBA history to average more than 10 rebounds per game.

Her 2,653 total rebounds have Charles in sixth all-time. She is second among active players behind only Rebekah Brunson. This is made up of 1,873 defensive rebounds (7th all-time) and 780 offensive rebounds (9th all-time).

However, it is not just rebounding where Charles is making history. She is currently 18th all-time in total blocks with 294. Her 1.11 per game is good for 25th all-time.

Charles is also one of only eight players in the history of the league to average more than 18.0 points per game. This has her in 20th all-time for total points with 4,772.

Charles has led this team to the upper echelons of the WNBA for the last four years. The 2012 league MVP is just that good. However, she has never had the success she desires the most, a WNBA championship. The current Liberty roster is not going to help her get there either.

Unless the Liberty sign a quality free agent guard, they are not going to get to the top with Charles shouldering the load the way she is. Because she is so good, Charles is also not going to let the Liberty slip down the table far enough to get into the lottery.

There are a number of teams who have taken leaps forward this season. Unfortunately for the Liberty, the off-season stopped them from improving on their third from last season. They will probably slip down the table but will still make the playoffs, mainly thanks to the play of Charles.
