Victoria Vivians – Draft Profile
By Matt Hallett
Victoria Vivians is a 6’1” forward out of Mississippi State. Vivians was named to the All-American team in her final year. She led Mississippi State into the NCAA championship game twice in the last two years.
Vivians was named to the SEC All-Freshman team in 2015 and then followed this up with the SEC All-Tournament team in 2016. Viviens has scored 2,344 points in her college career and collected 10 double-doubles.
For her career, Vivians averaged 16.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game. However, it is not just the numbers Vivians puts up, it is when she does it. She scored 19 points in last year’s Final Four matchup with the University of Connecticut to knock the favorites.
This season, Vivians scored heavily when it counts. In the final four game against Louisville, Vivians top-scored for the match with 25 points. The, in the championship game Vivians had her team in a position to win as she top scored again with 21 points. Unfortunately for Mississippi State, Notre Dame was too good as a team.
However, what this says is Vivians is capable of stepping up and scoring when needed. The big stage does not impact the way she plays. In college, she has been the player which means defenses have been able to concentrate on her. In the WNBA she will be up against better players but will find she is defended one on one.
While Vivians can score from anywhere she has question marks on her defense. One of the other issues is she can sometimes get tunnel vision and not take the best option on the court, although she has clearly worked on that this past season.
Some mock drafts have Vivians going as late as tenth in the first round. If she falls this low, any team which is able to pick her up is getting a bargain. As a forward with guard skills, Vivians could even go as high as third in the draft. If the Chicago Sky like what they saw during the NCAA tournament they could take her over Gabby Williams.
A second good option in the draft is the Dallas Wings where Vivians would be a great option backing up the 2 and 3 spots on the floor.
