Connecticut Sun guard Courtney Williams has been absent from the team’s West Coast trip due to a physical altercation with teammate Alex Bentley in a public location, multiple sources tell WNBAinsidr. The team had reported that Williams was away from the team and did not make the trip due to personal reasons. On Monday afternoon, the Sun traded Alex Bentley to the Atlanta Dream for guard Layshia Clarendon and a 2019 second round pick.

Multiple sources have confirmed that the altercation occurred after the Sun game at home against the Indiana Fever on June 27th and before tip-off against the Seattle Storm on July 1st.

The nature of the altercation, location of the incident, and scope of her absence from the team are unknown at this time.

The team and Williams’s agent both declined multiple requests for comment.

Williams has been listed as out for personal reasons during Connecticut’s entire road trip, which started last Sunday in Seattle. The Sun went 1-3 on their trip, with their lone win coming against the Los Angeles Sparks this past Tuesday.

In Williams’ last appearance with the team, she scored 13 points in 34 minutes as the Sun rolled to a 101-89 home win over the Fever. Up until this road trip, Williams had started in every game for the Sun.

In her third season in the WNBA, Williams is averaging 12.3 points in 27 minutes per game for the Sun. She’s averaging a career high in rebounds (6.0 per game), assists (2.9), and three-point percentage (40.0).

Her points and rebounds per game averages rank her third on the team, while her three-point percentage is Connecticut’s best. In two of the Sun’s losses without Williams, the team has shot no better than 31 percent from behind the three-point line.

The Sun currently stand at 10-9 after opening the 2018 season winning seven of their first eight games. Connecticut is now 3-7 in its last 10 games and returns home to face the New York Liberty on wednesday. It is unknown whether Williams will be available for the game.
