Kia Nurse – Draft Profile

Kia Nurse is a 6’0” guard from the University of Connecticut. While Nurse does not have the same profile as her teammates Gabby Williams or Azura Stevens, she does have a cool head and the ability to do the right thing every time.

Nurse averaged 14.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.3 steals per game last season with the Huskies. She is a two time NCAA champion as well as making the Final Four on to other occasions. Nurse has to be respected as she does not seem to miss a shot when she is open.

Nurse is well above an average defender at the college level which should translate to being a competent defender at the next level. Nurse presents to be a player who will be a solid contributor at the WNBA level.

If she goes to a contending team she will probably come off the bench. When her teammate Stevens nominated for the draft last season, Nurse draft stocks were one of the few that did not change.

She has always been discussed as being potentially picked towards the end of the first round. Some mock drafts have her as high as the eighth pick. This would see her go to the Indiana Fever but it is more likely that Nurse will be selected with the ninth pick. This will see her heading to the Connecticut Sun.

If she does head to the Sun, she will become a tremendous back-up for both Jasmine Thomas and Courtney Williams. Both of these players are 5’8” and 5’9” which makes it hard to match up with the bigger guards on teams like the Los Angeles Sparks.

If the Sun are to compete with the top echelon of teams, they need to be able to stop these guards.
